The London No 1 Gin was created the Spanish Sherry and spirits producer Gonzales Byass by to provide both a flavoursome and visually striking gin for a gin and tonic. The gin itself is a pretty turquoise blue colour (the bottle is clear glass) and is distilled in small batches under the supervision of Charles Maxwell at Thames Distillers, in London, who is responsible for quite a surprising number of gin brands.
London No 1 Gin was designed to be made according to three principals: the quality of the base spirit must be good, it must be distilled in small batches in pot stills and it must be made using 12 carefully selected botanicals. The base spirit is made from the finest grain sourced from farms in Suffolk and Norfolk and the small pot stills produce a complex gin. The 12 botanicals are an international affair:
Juniper from Croatia
Cassia Bark
Cinnamon from Sri Lanka
Lemon Peel from Italy
Liquorice from Turkey
Almond from Greece
Coriander from China
Orange Peel from Italy
Iris Root from Italy
Angelica Root from the French Alps
Bergamot from Italy
Summer Savory from the French Alps
Anyone that knows about gin will realise that re-distilling grain spirit in the presence of the botanicals will not give the gin a blue colour. So why is London No 1 Gin blue? The blue colouration actually comes from a final maceration with Gardenia flowers, a houseplant favoured by Queen Victoria in the 1800s. The gin takes its from the address of the 1st Duke of Wellington’s, Arthur Wellesley, London townhouse. The formal name is Apsley House but it quickly became known as No 1 London.
This is an elegant, clean and aromatic gin which makes an cool, blue coloured gin and tonic and, bottled at 47% abv, it is perfect for cocktails.
Serve in a gin and tonic with a piece of lime peel and a few juniper berries.
London No 1 GIn has a luminous, pale yet bright bluish aquamarine colour (its not the bottle!). The nose reveals delightful scents of juniper berries and balsamic aromas. The alcohol is well integrated, elegant and clean. It has a delicate palate with some viscosity and a fine, dry mouth feel. A mild but very aromatic gin with quality balsamic notes. Well balanced with a long, sensual finish.
