Tudor Cherry Gin is a limited edition gin produced by the Portsmouth Distillery. It is a pink, cherry flavoured gin based on the distillery’s Tudor Gin.
Portsmouth Distillery was established in 2018 by ex Naval officers Vince Noyce and Giles Collighan and Dich Oatley who had spent many years working in the wine trade. Vince and Giles shared a mutual love of rum and the distillery was founded with the aim of making a Portsmouth Rum. The first product to be released was their Fort Gin. This was followed by three rums in quick succession, a spiced rum, a white rum and “garden rum”: the Cinnabar, 1968 and Forum. The current core line-up was completed with the launch of the Tudor Gin.
The base for this is the distillery’s Tudor Gin. This is is handcrafted in small batches (approximately 150 litres) at the fort and is distilled using two stills, a 500 litre pot still made in China nicknamed Sophie Wu and a 4 plate column still. The botanicals are inspired by botanicals that have been found on the wreck Henry VIII’s flagship warship, The Mary Rose. The botanicals are juniper, dandelion, hemp seed, hazelnut, and cherry.
To make this cherry-flavoured Gin, the Tudor Gin, which alrady has decent cherry notes, is macerated with freeze dried cherries for 24 hours and then filtered. This really bumps up the cherry flavours and aromas and also lends the gin its reddish pink colour. Finally a little sugar syrup is added. This gin is only lightly sweetened (compare to some flavoured gins) and it is bottled at 37.5cl. As Dich Oatley from Portsmouth Distillery says, “it is not a sticky sweet Gin like most pink offerings, which we always wanted to avoid at all costs.”
On the nose, the Cherry cuts through, on the palate, although sweeter than Tudor Gin it is not too sweet and the wonderful London dry is still present. As the palate clears the mouth is left with a soft sweet cherry finish.
Serve Tudor Cherry Gin can be enjoyed neat, over ice, or as an ingredient in cocktails. It is a popular choice for making gin and tonics (try it with an light Indian tonic water), gin fizzes, and other mixed drinks (try with lemonade). Try it in a Cherry Collins or a Maraschino Gin Fizz.
