Portsmouth Distillery Tudor Gin is the second gin to be launched by The Portsmouth Distillery. It was launched in June 2020 and joins its sister gin, the Fort Gin, which was first launched back in 2018. It has since been joined by a cherry-flavoured version. All three Portsmouth Gins (and rums) are available to buy at Fareham Wine Cellar.
Portsmouth Distillery Tudor Gin is handcrafted in small batches (approximately 150 litres) at the fort and is distilled using two stills, a 500-litre pot still made in China, nicknamed Sophie Wu, and a 4 plate column still. The gin is bottled at 41%.
The botanicals are inspired by botanicals that have been found on the wreck Henry VIII’s flagship warship, The Mary Rose. The botanicals are:
Portsmouth Tudor Gin has a very smart presentation in keeping with the Fort Gin. A plan of the Fort is the main feature of the label, with Tudor-inspired Hampshire Roses. There is also the Portsmouth Star and Crescent Coat of Arms at the top of the label. The inside of the back label features a painting of The Mary Rose, and for each bottle of Tudor Gin sold, a generous donation is made to The Mary Rose Trust.
The Portsmouth Distillery was established in 2018 by ex-Navy officers Vince Noyce and Giles Collighan and Dich Oatley, who has spent many years working in the wine trade. Vince and Giles shared a mutual love of rum, and the distillery was founded with the aim of making a Portsmouth Rum.
The distillery’s spiced Cinnabar Rum and flavoured Forum Rum were released early on, but the real aim of the project is to release aged rums. They have since released the 3-Year-Old 1812 Rum and, in 2024, the first 5-Year-Old 1747 Rum was released. The Portsmouth Rum range is completed by the 1968 White Rum, Mutiny Coconut Rum and a Dark Navy Rum.
Serve Tudor Gin in a gin and tonic with a light tonic water garnished with a couple of cherries and perhaps some orange peel. The rich and full flavour would also make this a perfect gin for a Negroni.
Tudor Gin is a rich, yet dry gin. The nose is aromatic with expressive aromas of pine-y, menthol juniper with some red fruit and nutty nuances. The gin is full and rich in the mouth with a lovely soft and silky mouthfeel. There is a burst of sweet red cherry at the front of the palate followed by slightly woody, nutty flavours and a touch of spice on the finish. The finish is dry, warming and very long.
