Description

Jeffersonsons Very Small Batch Bourbon is, as the name suggests, a very small batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. Small Batch basically refers to an American whiskey which is blended from a very small number of selected barrels. There is no legal definition of what a small batch whiskey is but the current bottling of Jeffersons Very Small Batch consists of around 3,500 bottles (75cl) which would suggest it comes from a selection of just over 13 standard bourbon whiskey barrels (200L).

Jeffersons Bourbon was founded in 1997 by Trey Zoeller and his father Chet, a famed Bourbon historian. There had been a long history of spirit production in the family stretching back to 1799 when one of Trey’s ancestral grandmothers was arrested for the “production and sales of spirituous liquors” or moonshinin. The brand is named for Thomas Jefferson who was known for his curiosity and experimental still.

Jeffersons do not distill their own spirit but they buy barrels of whisky from other distillers and blend the whisky to their own specification. Although this might sound strange, this is not really that different to third part Scotch whisky bottlings who buy whisky from the distillery, age and bottle it under their own label.

Jeffersons Very Small Batch Bourbon Whiskey is a blend of 4 different components one of which makes up 55% of the blend and helps to maintain consistency of the blend whilst the others add different characteristics and complexity. Aged (most likely for somewhere between 6 and 10 years) in barrels with a light char which allows a myriad of secondary flavours to express themselves. Smooth and light but with good complexity.
