The Kings Ginger is a ginger liqueur made for Berry Bros and Rudd. It has recently been revamped and is presented in a smart new bottle with the tag line “ginger liqueur with a hint of lemon zest.” Bottled at 29.9% ABV.
King Edward VII reigned from 1901 to 1910 and was a customer of Berry Bros, the wine and spirits merchant established at No. 3, St James Street, London, in 1698. Berry Bros. & Rudd first supplied the British Royal Family during King George III’s reign in 1760 and continues to do so to the present day.
The story goes that the Royal Physician was concerned about the monarch’s health, exposed as he was to the elements indulging another of his preferred pursuits, driving his horseless carriage, a Daimler. In 1903 the doctor therefore commissioned Berry Bros and Rudd to formulate a liqueur which would warm and revivify His Majesty. The result was a rich, golden liqueur with a pronounced spicy ginger emphasis and delightfully crisp flavour. For centuries ginger has been celebrated for its medicinal properties.
The King’s Ginger is a high-strength liqueur created by the careful maceration of ginger root, enlivened by the judicious addition of citrus in the form of lemon oil. Although warming and heartening on a cold day as originally intended, it is a splendidly uplifting tonic to be appreciated on its own all year round as well as in any number of cocktails and long drinks.
Most recently Berry Bros have bought production back from The Netherlands to the UK and the ginger level was also given a boost.
The King’s Gingers supports The Royal Countryside Fund and donates 10% of profits. The charity was Established by HRH The Prince of Wales in 2010 and was created to improve the prospects of family farm businesses and the quality of rural life.
Colour: Hay and straw, rich golden syrup.
Nose: It is unmistakably Ginger – a cloud of fresh natural ginger with a faint aura of zesty lemon swiftly entices the first sip.
Palate: The initial flow of ginger syrup sweetness is gently interrupted by the tingle of fresh ginger and a subtle and gentle uplift of lemon citrus. Warm, fulfilling and of great length.
The Kings Ginger Liqueur is an ideal winter drink, most suitable for shooting, hunting, fishing and other country pursuits. It is also great with ginger beer with ice and a slice of lime.
Try a dash in a hot chocolate or with ginger beer, ice and lime in a long drink.
