Looking to buy mead near Fareham? Jack Ratt Westcountry Mead from Lyme Bay Winery is an excellent choice for those seeking a lighter, more versatile honey mead with gentle summer appeal. Think of it as a fresher, spiced cousin to their popular Christmas Mead or their Spiced Mead – medium-sweet with warming spice notes, subtle honey sweetness, and an easy-drinking character that suits many occasions.
At Fareham Wine Cellar, we stock a carefully chosen range of quality meads, including the Jack Ratt Traditional, Black Cherry and Spiced Mead. Whether you’re new to mead or a long-time enthusiast, Lyme Bay Meads deliver great value and authentic character from a trusted English producer.
Jack Ratt Westcountry Mead is crafted by Lyme Bay Winery, based at Shute near Axminster in Dorset. What began as a small cider shop in 1994 has grown into one of the South West’s most respected producers of ciders, wines, meads, liqueurs, and award-winning English wines. Their meads honour time-honoured methods while using natural spices and flavourings – the kind of “botanicals” you’d find in a fine gin.
Mead, often called the “nectar of the gods,” is one of the oldest alcoholic drinks in history. It dates back thousands of years to ancient civilisations and features in literary classics like Beowulf and Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. Traditionally made by fermenting honey and water with yeast, it has long been associated with health, vitality, and celebration.
The Jack Ratt range takes its name from the notorious 18th-century Devon smuggler Jack Rattenbury – known as the “Rob Roy of the West.” After a colourful life at sea as a fisherman, pilot, and smuggler, he published his memoirs in 1837. Each bottle captures that adventurous West Country spirit.
Pop into our shop at 55 High Street, Fareham, or order online for convenient delivery. Explore more English meads, ciders, and wines from independent makers like Lyme Bay Winery while you’re here.
Jack Ratt Westcountry Mead offers a harmonious balance of honeyed sweetness and aromatic spices. It’s lighter and more approachable than heavier spiced meads, making it ideal for warmer months or year-round sipping. Serve it chilled as an aperitif, at room temperature with food, or gently warmed as a comforting evening drink.
