Gold of Mauritius Dark Rum is made by Litchquor Precious Spirits on the island of Mauritius in the Indian ocean. It is the brainchild of master blender Frederic Bestel.
Frederic buys un-aged rums from various small distilleries in Mauritius. This particular rum is then aged for a period of between 12 to 15 months in casks that have previously held South African fortified wine (Port style wine). As Frederic says at the brand importers website, “unlike most other rums, the unique flavour of Gold of Mauritius rum is dominated by the influence of the port residue within the wooden casks rather than the wood exclusively.” So I am guessing they don’t particularly wash the barrels after emptying them of the wine. This comes through in the Rum – it has a very vinous, wine-y character. As Frederic says, “In the production process I use elements of different origins: the rum is 100% Mauritian, the production method is inspired by the South and Central American procedures and the barrels come from South Africa. Again: as the island itself, this variety in influences perfectly reflects the different cultural backgrounds which are reunited in Mauritius.”
Gold of Mauritius Dark Rum is an interesting rum, it is young but it is quite drinkable. It is well balanced with sweet, chocolatey notes, tropical fruit and savoury touches of oak. If you like Port and you like rums on the sweeter side then you will like this. It does beg the question though, should this really be classified as a flavoured rum.
Gold of Mauritius Dark Rum is great drunk neat, over ice or in cocktails like an Old Fashioned or Manhattan. Frederic Bestel recommends it with a cigar and has found that it goes quite well grilled red meat and spiced curries!
