Equiano Rum is a carefully selected blend of African and Caribbean Rum. It is is a joint venture between Gray’s Distillery in Mauritius and Foursquare Distillery (producer of R L Seale’s, Doorly’s et al.) in Barbados and is a carefully selected blend of Mauritian rum aged in French limousin oak and and ex-Cognac casks and Bajan rum aged in American white oak casks.
Global rum ambassador Ian Burrell and his team have created a rum that celebrates their beliefs, naming it after Olaudah Equiano, an unsung freedom fighter whose autobiography shaped history. Like our rum, Equiano was born in Africa, journeyed to the Caribbean and settled in the UK, where he became a prominent figure in the freedom and abolition movement in both Britain and the US.
Equiano’s distinct liquid starts at emerging new world producers Gray’s Distillery in Mauritius, where 100% pure rum matured in ex-cognac casks for a minimum of 10 years. Blended with award-winning ex-bourbon cask rum from Foursquare in Barbados.
Bottled and blended by Richard Seale at the Foursquare Distillery in St Philip, Barbados.
Nose: Rich, notes of dried fruits such as raisins and sultanas combine with sweet toffee, butterscotch and caramel culminating with a suggestion of orange peel, vanilla and buttered wood.
Taste: It has a warm toffee and butterscotch mouth-feel, with chewy raisins and brown sugar flavours that emerge from the liquid as it caresses your tongue.
Finish: Although Equiano is a naturally sweet rum with no added sugar or spices, it has a medium to sweet ending with touches of oak, anise, sweet pepper with a hint of bitter orange peel.
