About The Mossburn Ephemera Collection

Created by master blender Neil Macleod Mathieson, The Mossburn Ephemera Collection is a highly limited series of 12 rare, independent bottlings from Mossburn Distillers & Blenders. Drawing from obscure, experimental, and long-aged casks tucked away deep in the Mossburn archives, each release offers a fascinating journey through Scottish lore, history, and liquid craftsmanship. Every expression features distinctive cask finishes, bespoke artwork, and a story rooted in historic events or forgotten folklore.

The complete 12-bottle collection comprises ten exceptional Scotch whiskies – spanning blended grains, blended malts, and blended Scotches – alongside two aged Caribbean rums. Extremely scarce, just 1,100 bottles in total have been allocated to the UK market, with individual releases strictly limited to between 150 and 250 bottles.

Why Is This Whisky Called “Wandering Willie”?

This is named after the legend of Wandering Willie – under the influence of many a fine dram, Willie, a 17th-century blind fiddler, wandered Border inns telling cautionary folk tales. His most famous spun the tale of a hard-pressed tenant whose landlord, Sir Robert Redgauntlet, died before issuing a receipt for his rent. Unwilling to acknowledge the payment, Redgauntlet’s greedy heirs demanded the money a second time.

Desperate, the tenant fortified himself with local spirit and rode out into the night to plead his case. An enigmatic stranger promised to take him directly to the old Laird, leading him straight to the underworld, where Redgauntlet was carousing with his fellow departed. Perhaps as penance for a lifetime of uncharitable deeds, the dead Laird surprisingly signed the receipt, allowing the lucky tenant to escape hell and live to drink another day!
