Description

The Gauldrons Blended Malt Scotch Whisky is a small batch blended Whisky made by Douglas Laing & Co Ltd. It is their latest release (October 2017) in their “Remarkable Regional Malt” series and is a Campbeltown Blended Malt Scotch Whisky. It joins the other releases in the series, Rock Oyster, Scallywag, The Epicurean, Timorous Beastie and Big Peat.

Douglas Laing & Co Ltd are a specialist independent whisky blender and bottler with over 65 years in the business. The company was founded in 1948 Fred Douglas Laing in 1948 and is now run by his son and granddaughter, Fred Junior and Cara. Douglas Laing  sources the finest, and often rarest, Scotch Whisky stocks from across all of Scotland’s Whisky regions and bottle them as the Distiller intended: At high alcohol strength, and without colouring or chill-filtration.

Campbeltown whiskies are distilled in the burgh of Campbeltown which is located in the Kintyre peninsula  in the southwest of Argyll and Bute. It was once considered to be one of the most important whisky producing regions of Scotland with some 28 distilleries. Today there are three distilleries: Glen Scotia, Springbank (producing Springbank, Hazelburn, and Longrow) and the recently founded Glenglye which has begun releasing it whisky under the name of Kilkerran. Campbeltown whisky is often described as a cross between Lowland and Highland whiskies with a slight salty character due to the distilleries’ proximity to to the coast and the Mull of Kintyre.

The Gauldrons is inspired by the eponymous dark sandy coves on Campbeltown’s west shores and literally means “bay of storms”. It was here King Robert the Bruce, having been defeated by his enemies, was encouraged, whilst watching a spider building his web with great patience but great difficulty, to try, try and try again. It is this ancient legend which is reflected in The Gauldrons packaging which features an intricate spider illustration. Fred Laing, Douglas Laing Managing Director, comments: “The Gauldrons has seen us carefully marry together some of our best, and indeed rarest, casks of Campbeltown Single Malt. The resulting spirit is a unique combination of salt and sweet – the archetypal maritime tang balanced perfectly by a sugary, cereal character.”

So The Gauldrons is a blend of single malts from some (perhaps all) of the above distilleries. As mentioned it is bottled without colouring or chill-filtration at an ABV of 46.2%.

Each batch is numbered to allow bottlings to be compared and contrasted as the Campbeltown spirit develops in cask over the years.
