Haig Club is a single grain Scotch whisky. The grain whisky is sourced from the Cameronbridge Grain Distillery in Levenmouth near Fife, Scotland. It is one of the largest, or if not the largest, then certainly the most famous grain distillery in Scotland. It was opened as the Haig distillery in 1824 and in 1830 became the first distillery to produce grain whisky using the column still method. It is owned by Diageo and and whisky produced here is used in brands such as Johnnie Walker, J&B, Vat 69 and White Horse.
Haig Club is produced by blending grain whisky that has been aged in three different cask types – first-fill, rejuvenated and refill ex-Bourbon cask. It is presented in a rather cool, square blue bottle which pays tribute to the tradition of Scotch whisky blenders using blue glass so they would not be influenced by the colour of the spirits they were tasting but by aromas and flavours alone.
As you may have seen on television and in the press, Haig Club Single Grain Scotch Whisky is promoted by David Beckham.
Haig Club Single Grain Scotch Whisky has a fruity, smooth nose with a hint of citrus, apple, hints of toffee and spicy, coconut aromas. The palate is sweetish with flavours of toffee, caramel, toasty oak and some baking spices. The finish is sweet, vanilla with a hint of oak and spice. A fresh and clean style of whisky with good mouthfeel.
Drink Haig Club on its own or in cocktails like an Old Fashioned. I know this is heresy to some, but try it over ice.
