Mossburn Vintage Casks #37 North British is a third-party bottling of Single Grain Scotch Whisky. It is part of Mossburn’s Vintage Casks range, a collection of Single Malt Scotch Whiskies each issued from a strictly limited and select batch of casks.
Mossburn Distillers & Blenders is a new Scotch whisky project owned by Marussia Beverage. It is part of the empire controlled by Swedish billionaire Frederik Paulsen. The company is headquartered in Jedburgh, in the Scottish Borders, on the site of the former Jedforest Hotel. Their new distillery, called Reivers Distillery, will be one of the first new distilleries to be built in the Borders for over 150 years. Mossburn has also established Torabhaig Distillery on the Isle of Skye, which opened in 2017 (only the second distillery on Skye after Highland Park). The parent company also owns the Kaikyo Distillery in Japan, which produces Hatozaki whiskies. Not content with this, they have also created the peaty Caisteal Chamuis whisky range. The first Mossburn bottlings were released in 2017.
Building a whisky distillery and waiting for whisky to come online (the spirit has to be aged for at least 3 years before it can even be called whisky) is a long-term project. In the meantime, Mossburn has started bottling a small collection of ever-changing single malt whiskies and two permanent blended malts, an Island and a Speyside, with bespoke cask bills. There are also some very limited, occasional single-cask bottlings.
The North British Distillery was founded in 1885 and is one of the largest grain whisky distilleries in Scotland. It is located in the Gorgie area of Edinburgh and, today, it is owned by Lothian Distillers, a 50/50 partnership between the Diageo and The Edrington Group. The North British Distillery plays a crucial role in the Scotch whisky industry, providing high-quality grain whisky that is blended with malt whiskies to create many well-known Scotch brands. Grain whisky produced here goes into many famous Scotch blends including Johnnie Walker Black Label, J&B Rare, The Famous Grouse and Cutty Sark. Aged Single Grain Whiskies is now not easy to find.
Mossburn Vintage Casks #37 North British was distilled in 2008 and bottled in March 2024 as a 15 Year Old Whisky. It was finished in ex-Oloroso Sherry hogheads.
Bottled at 58.8% ABV without any colouring or chill filtration.
Nose: Light cereal wrapped in coffee and cacao Sherry aromas with some molasses, raisins and figs adding to an edge of pipe tobacco.
Palate: Rich sherry opening, with walnuts and hazelnuts. Light peppery notes lead to a slightly dry bittersweet finish that carries more cacao, prune and fig.
