Glenmorangie Allta is the 10th edition in Glenmorangie’s Private Edition range, an annual limited edition produced by Glemorangie’s our Director of Whisky Creation and Distilling, Dr Bill Lumsden.

This makes the full line up of Glenmorangie’s Private Edition range so far: Sonnalta (PX Sherry cask), Finealta (Oloroso cask, lightly peated), Artein (Super Tuscan wine cask), Ealanta (Virgin Oak Casks from the Mark Twain Forest, Missouri), Companta (red Burgundy and Rhone dessert wine casks), Tusail (made with floor-malted Maris Otter Barley), Milsean (re-charred Douro wine casks), Bacalta (ex Malmsey Madeira casks), Spios (ex Rye Whisky casks) and now the Allta.

Glenmorangie Allta is the result of Dr Bill Lumsden’s (PhD in yeast physiology) experiments with different types of yeast strains for the fermentation of the mash. Lumsden was determined to find a way to showcase the influence of yeast over the whisky distilling process. This led to the search for naturally occurring yeasts on the barley grown for Glenmorangie production. Ripening ears of Cadboll barley from fields near the distillery were sent to the lab and a previously unidentified yeast called Saccharomyces Diaemath, suitable for whisky production,  was isolated. It is this yeast that is used in production of Glenmorangie Allta and it produces a rich a fruity style that Glenmorangie hope will open up compelling possibilities for the future of Scotch whisky production.

Glenmorangie Allta Private Edition No 10 aged in ex Bourbon barrels and bottled at 51.2% non chill filtered. Released early 2019. Why is it called Allta? Allta is the Gaelic for “wild”.
