Glenmorangie Bacalta is the 8th edition in Glenmorangie’s Private Edition range, an annual limited edition produced by Glenmorangie’s Director of Whisky Creation and Distilling, Dr Bill Lumsden. This makes the full line up of Glenmorangie’s Private Edition range so far Sonnalta (PX Sherry cask), Finealta (Oloroso cask, lightly peated), Artain (Super Tuscan wine cask), Ealanta (Virgin Oak Casks from the Mark Twain Forest, Missouri), Companta (red Burgundy and Rhone dessert wine casks), Tusail (made with floor-malted Maris Otter Barley) and Milsean (re-charred Douro wine casks).
Glenmorangie have been using Madeira cask finishes since 1995 but, for the Glenmorangie Bacalta, and inspired by the long, balmy days on the island of Madeira, Lumsden was looking for some very special casks. Instead buying used casks Glenmorangie commissioned bespoke casks (tight-grained, medium to heavily toasted American oak 250-litre hogsheads) long-seasoned with Malmsey, the sweetest, loveliest and most prized of all Madeira wines. These casks were then baked in the sun while the intriguing wine they contained slowly sweetened within. The casks were then shipped to Scotland to age the whisky. Glenmorangie Bacalta is a NAS (no age statement) whisky but it is thought to be comprised of whisky aged for around 10 years in bourbon casks followed by a two year period finishing in Madeira casks.
And why Bacalta? Bacalta is the Scots Gaelic word for “baked”.
Bottled at 46%, non chill filtered. Released early 2017.
