Glenmorangie The Nectar 16 Years Old is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky that replaces the previously popular Glenmorangie Nectar d’Or. This new release is bottled as a 16-year-old whisky with an ABV of 46% and is finished in a combination of sweet white wine casks, rather than Sauternes alone. It sits alongside two other cask-finished whiskies in Glenmorangie’s portfolio: the Sherry Cask-finished Lasanta and the Port Cask-finished Quinta Ruban.
Glenmorangie’s origins can be traced back to 1843, although the area has reportedly produced alcoholic beverages since the Middle Ages. In the 1700s, a brewery existed on the site, utilizing the renowned Tarlogie springs that Glenmorangie continues to use today. However, it was not until 1843, when William Matheson purchased the property and installed old gin stills, that the site became an operational distillery. Today, Glenmorangie is owned by the luxury conglomerate LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy), which also owns the renowned Islay distillery, Ardbeg. Glenmorangie is recognized as one of the leading premium Scotch whisky brands, renowned for its exceptional quality and craftsmanship.
Glenmorangie The Nectar 16 Years Old was conceived by Dr Bill Lumsden, Head of Distilling & Whisky Creation, and was inspired by his memory of entering a French pastry shop with its heady, sweet, creamy and spicy aromas. Now aged for a total of 16 years, it first spends 14 years in ex-Bourbon casks. After this, it is then finished for 2 years in a new combination of sweet white wine casks. Sauternes and Monbazillac casks from France bring sumptuous notes of pastry, brioche, meringue, and baked apples, while Moscatel casks from Spain offer sweet, syrupy dessert-like notes. Tokaji casks from Hungary add white chocolate, almond, and honeycomb flavours to the creation. These rare casks bring layers of mellow sweetness to Glenmorangie’s renowned smooth style.
The whisky is bottled non-chill-filtered for enhanced aroma and texture, at an ABV of 46%. This ensures that the full range of flavours and aromas are preserved, allowing the drinker to experience the true character of this exceptional single malt.
From Glenmorangie:
Colour: Bronze Gold
Aroma: Rich and heady, almost decadent, with notes of baking brioche, leesy wine, baked apricot, vanilla pudding, toasted almond and chestnuts and hints of chocolate truffles. With water, there is a burst of candy sweetness, touches of orange syrup, a flinty minerality, and a curious, distinctive herbal top note, like sage or basil.
Taste: The texture is unctuous and sticky, but with a balancing lemon zestiness. This leads into rich, sweet flavours of vanilla crème anglaise, baked apricots, warm raisin bread, roasting chestnuts, and a mixture of spices, particularly nutmeg and star anise. The oaky backbone lasts throughout the taste, but is always balanced by sweet, fruity and spicy notes.
Finish: The finish is long and lingering, with some lemon rind, baking bread and a touch of honeycomb.
