Description

Mossburn Single Cask Teaninich 2008 Oloroso Finish is a single vintage, single cask, third party bottling of Highland Single Malt Whisky. It is part of Mossburn’s Single Cask range, a collection of Single Malt Scotch Whiskies each issuing from a strictly limited and select batch of casks.

Mossburn Distillers & Blenders is a brand new Scotch whisky project owned by Marussia Beverage which is part of the empire controlled by Swedish billionaire Frederik Paulsen. The company is headquartered at Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders on the site of the former Jedforest Hotel. Their new distillery, called Reivers Distillery, will be one of the first new distilleries to be built in the Borders for over 150 years. Mossburn have also established Torabhaig Distillery on the Isle of Skye, which opened in 2017 (the second distillery on Skye after Highland Park). The parent company also own the Kaikyo Distillery in Japan which produces Hatozaki whiskies. Not content with this, they have also created the peaty Caisteal Chamuis whisky range. The first Mossburn bottlings were released in 2017. Building a whisky distillery and waiting for whisky to come online (the spirit has to be aged for at least 3 years before it can even be called whisky) is a long term project. So, in the meantime, Mossburn have started the ball rolling by bottling a small collection of ever-changing single malt whiskies and two permanent blended malts, an Island and Speyside, with bespoke cask bills. There are also some very limited occasional single cask bottlings.

The Teaninich Distillery is located in Alness in the Highlands. It was founded by Hugh Munro in 1817 on his estate of Teaninich Castle. The distillery is owned by Diageo and the whisky produced at Teaninich is primarily used for blending purposes in popular brands such as Johnnie Walker and VAT 69. However, in recent years, the distillery has also released official single malt bottlings, allowing whisky enthusiasts to experience the unique flavors of Teaninich independently.

Mossburn Single Cask Teaninich 2008 Oloroso Finish was distilled in February 2008 and bottled as a 14 year old in November 2022.

It is finished in an Oloroso Sherry Puncheon and bottled, non chill filtered, natural colour at 54.9% ABV.

Only 685 bottles produced.

Tasting Notes

Nose – Floral, grassy new mown hay; giving way to linseed, a touch of incense and just a little hint of dusty old books.

Palate – Spice and black pepper to the fore, with some complex spice and undertones of charred wood and pipe tobacco.

Finish – Sweetness with some roasted hazelnut notes.
