Longmorn 18 Year Old Speyside Single Malt Whisky has been aged for 18 years in a combination of American oak barrels and hogsheads. It is part of Pernod Ricard’s “Secret Speyside” range.
The Secret Speyside Collection is a carefully curated selection of 18-30 year old whiskies that herald from four of Speyside’s most elusive distilleries – including the vanished distillery of Caperdonich, the pioneering Longmorn distillery, the landmark Glen Keith distillery, and the remote Braes of Glenlivet distillery.
Longmorn was founded in 1984 by John Duff, Charles Shirres and George Thomson. Built on the site of an old Chapel, the Longmorn distillery is located approximately two and a half miles south of Elgin on the main road from Elgin to Rothes. The name Longmorn comes from “Lhanmorgund” meaning “place of the holy man”. The distillery doubled its production capacity in 1972 and again in 1974. The number of stills went from 4 to 8. Seagram purchased the distillery in 1977 but now it belongs to “The Chivas and Glenlivet Group”, part of Seagram bought by the French group Pernod-Ricard in 2001. Longmorn Scotch Whisky has been described as “Speyside’s best-kept secret” – prized by blenders (it is a key part of the Chivas Regal blends) and savoured by connoisseurs, but not widely available to the general public as a bottled single malt.
The unique shape of the broad and smooth shouldered stills at Longmorn have not changed since they were designed and installed by John Duff . The broadness of these stills provides greater contact with the copper during distillation, creating a great depth, smoothness and fruitiness – known by distillers as the “kiss of the copper”. The water used to make the spirit is drawn directly from a local underground lake called the Moray Aquifer, a water source that cannot be seen or accessed, guaranteeing exceptional purity and adding an air of mystery to the production process. Longmorn The Distillers Choice whisky is aged in combination of three different cask types – American oak, ex- Oloroso Sherry casks and traditional oak barrels. The depth and intensity of Longmorn spirit is enhanced in the maturation process by the inclusion of a high proportion of first-fill casks, which add increased depth and create a taste that lingers on the palate. Longmorn whisky has always been famous for its classic toffee / caramel character and this triple-cask maturation puts bit of a new spin on things.
Longmorn 18 Year Old Speyside is a limited edition that has been double matured in American oak barrels and hogsheads.
Longmorn 18 Year Old Speyside is elegant and fruity with sweet pear and mango followed by creamy toffee and orange marmalade. Soft fudge and ripe, juicy pear flavours reward the palate. Long and incredibly smooth with a touch of nutty oak.
