Cold River Vodka is a potato based American vodka made in the state of Maine, the most north eastern state in the USA.
Cold River Vodka was conceived by brothers Lee and Donnie Thibodeau. Growing up in Presque Isle, the heart of Maine’s potato country, they listened to their father and uncles tell their history of turning potatoes into vodka. However, the realities of tending to the potato crop and the rigors of the annual harvest left little time. After years of thinking of business ideas and talking about the future of Maine’s potato industry, the decision was taken to make the best possible potato based vodka from Maine potatoes.
Cold River potatoes are grown at Green Thumb Farms in Fryeburg and they are currently the only distillery in the USA that oversee its entire production, from ground to glass, from planting potato seed to bottling vodka (a bit like Chase Distillery in the UK). The name derives from the the Cold River which was carved out of western Maine by glacial activity many millenia ago – it is from this aquifer that the distillery takes its clear, pristine water. Cold River Vodka is triple-distilled in a copper pot still and is bottled and numbered on site.
As a potato based vodka this it is also a gluten free vodka.
