Rebel Yell Small Batch Reserve Bourbon Whiskey is a Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey bottled at 45.3% abv. It is a wheated whiskey. The mashbill is wheat, corn and malt, but with a higher proportion of wheat than most other Bourbons. The wheat component produces softer, smoother flavours when compared with rye in blends, for example. As a Kentucky Straight Bourbon, Rebel Yell Small Batch Reserve Bourbon Whiskey has to be aged for a minimum of 2 years. Made with Kentucky’s clean, pure limestone filtered water and aged in charred new oak barrels.
Rebel Yell can trace its history back to 1849 when the Rebel yell recipe was created, along with many other famous bourbons, at the famous Stitzel-Weller distillery. The W L Weller family were the first distillers to produce Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey using wheat instead of rye in the mash bill. The distillery managed to survive prohibition and Rebel Yell was first registered as a brand in 1936.
The “Rebel Yell” was a war cry used by Confederate soldiers to instill fear while engaged in battle during the American Civil War. It was also used as a chant of victory or a moral booster, General “Stonewall” Jackson was once quoted as saying “that’s the most beautiful sound in the world”. I can’t help thinking of Billy Idol!
