Pike Creek 10 Year Old Whisky is a blended Canadian whisky which is finished in rum cask. It is produced at the Hiram Walker Distillery in Windsor, Ontario by Corby who are affiliated with (partly owned by) drinks behemoth Pernod Ricard who import this whisky into the UK. They also produce J P Wiser’s and Lot 40 whisky. Canadian whisky tends to be a blended multi-grain spirit with a relatively high proportion of corn spirit producing a lighter and smoother style of whisky epitomised by the likes of Canadian Club and Crown Royal. It must be aged for at least 3 years in oak barrel. Today there is a bit more of a craft movement amongst Canadian whiskies with a bit more of an experimental approach to the mashbill and oak finishes.
The name Pike Creek comes from the Windsor, Ontario suburb where the Hiram Walker warehouses are located. Pike Creek was first produced in the 1990s but was eventually discontinued. It was relaunched in 2012 as a 7 or 8 year old with a Port cask finish. It is now a 10 year old Rum cask finish (in the UK, at least).
Pike Creek 10 Year Old Whisky is made from a mashbill of rye and corn which is double distilled in small column copper stills and aged in new white oak Bourbon barrels. This hand-crafted whisky is then finished in ex Rum barrels, carefully blended and then bottled in small batches.
