Description

Nikka Coffey Malt Whisky is the rare result of distilling malted barley mash through a Coffey still. The Coffey still is a continuous column still that is normally used for grain whisky production and I think Nikka are the only whisky distillers making a malt whisky in this way. Nikka has two Coffey stills at their in their Miyagikyo distillery which were were imported from Scotland in 1963. The Coffey still is named after French born Irishman Aeneas Coffey who devised the still and patented it in 1830. In the Coffey still, the distillation process is continuous, whereas the pot stills which are used in single malt production require two separate distillations. These old Coffey stills produce a distillate with more flavour and depth than modern column stills, imparting a distinct character that defines Nikka’s house blends. Nikka Coffey Malt Whisky offers a surprisingly rich texture and is an interesting and unique style of Japanese Whisky.
