Description

Nikka From The Barrel is a double matured blended Japanese whisky bottled at 51.4% abv.

Nikka Whisky was founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru. Masataka had travelled to Scotland in 1918 and after enrolling at Glasgow University, became the first Japanese person ever to study whisky making. He took chemistry courses at the university and apprenticed at distilleries, learning first-hand from craftsmen and received training as a blender. Masataka would later become known as a master blender. After returning to Japan in 1920 Masataka began work for a company who would produce Japan’s first whisky. In 1934 Taketsura built Nikka’s first distillery in Yoichi, Hokkaido, which he had always considered to be the ideal site in Japan for whisky-making. This was later joined, in 1969, by the Miyagikyo Distillery, also in northern Japan.

Nikka From The Barrel is of malt whiskies and grain whiskies. The malt component is sourced from both the Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries. It is labelled as “double-matured”. After the different whisky components have been aged separately they are then blended and then re-casked to allow the now blended whisky to marry together and age further. Compass Box Whisky in Scotland are very well known for this process. It brings another level of complexity and character to Japanese blended whisky. The name Nikka From The Barrel also refers to the fact the whisky is bottled at a cask strength of 51.4% abv. It is a well-balanced and harmonious whisky which is powerful, intense and aromatic.
