Chateau Rieussec is one of the most important, and largest properties in the wine-growing appellation of Sauternes. It was ranked as Premier Grand Cru in 1855 Classification of Bordeaux. It is made from a blend of Botrytis affected Semillon, Sauvignon and Muscadelle grapes.
Chateau Rieusssec is located in the heart of Sauternes in the commune of Fargues, at the junction of Fargues and Sauternes, and borders Château d’Yquem to the west. When the estate was purchased by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) in 1984 it consisted of 110 hectares, 68 hectares of which were under vine. Serious measures were implemented to increase the quality of the wines. More rigorous sorting of the grapes and fermentation in barrels, as well as a new cellar built in 1989, have resulted in a finer selection of the blend of each Rieussec Cru, where quality undoubtedly prevails over quantity. The main wine was therefore produced in far smaller quantities the 1990’s due to this much more meticulous selection, to the point that none at all was produced in 1993 (this was also the case in 1977 and again in 2012). There is a second wine produced called Carmes de Rieussec and a dry white wine called R de Rieussec.
The vineyards comprise some 93 hectares (230 acres) and are planted on sandy gravel (80%) and clay (20%) soils. They are planted with 80% Semillon, 17% Sauvignon and 3% Muscadelle. The techniques used in the vineyard are traditional to the Sauternes region. Harvesting takes place from September to November, over a period of 6 to 8 weeks, with several successive selections depending on the state of ripeness of the grapes and the development of Botrytis cinerea (noble rot).
Chateau Rieussec is a blend of 90 to 95% Semillon and 5 to 10% comprising of Muscadelle and Sauvignon Blanc. Depending on vintage it is aged between 18 and 26 months in barrel, 55% of which are new (from DBR’s own cooperage).
Chateau Rieussec 2009 is a blend 84% Sémillon, 12% Sauvignon Blanc and 43% Muscadelle.
At bottling:
A long period of ageing in oak barrels was needed to round off this very powerful wine. Citrus and fresh fruit aromas combine with candied apricot and green almonds on the nose. Great length on the palate matched with lively fresh fruit and a strong impression of honey and acacia blossom.
