Royal Tokaji 6 Puttonyos Aszu Gold Label Tokay is a sweet white wine made from the Royal Tokaji Wine Company’s 1st growth vineyards.
The Royal Tokaji Wine Company pioneered the renaissance of Tokaji after the fall of Communism in 1989. A group of foreign investors, including esteemed wine writer Hugh Johnson and Peter Vinding-Diers, formed the company in cooperation with 63 growers in Mád, the Hungarian village which friends jested was named in anticipation of their joint venture. Agreeing to produce only Aszú wines with four puttonyos or more, and using the classification of 1700 as their guide to the finest terroirs, the association of growers and investors produced their first vintage in 1990. Traditionally the number of Puttonyos in a wine would indicate the number of Puttony, 20kg units of Aszu grape paste or dough, added to a Gonci barrel containing 136kgs of the base grape must. Aszu means dried but today refers to grapes affected by Noble Rot (Botrytis Cinerea). This basic method remains but the classification is now determined by technical analysis of sugar levels. A 6 Puttonyos wine must have a sugar level of 150 to 180 g/L.
The Royal Tokaji 6 Puttonyos Aszu Gold Label Tokay is made from wine produced from the company’s 1st growth vineyards – so basically this is a blend of declassified 1st growth wines from various vineyards. Royal Tokaji 6 Puttonyos Aszu Gold Label is a blend of Furmint, Harslevelu and Muscat de Lunel (Yellow Muscat). Aszu grapes are individually cut from bunches on the vine. The Aszu grapes are thus macerated with the dry base wines for up to 48 hours and are then transferred into old Hungarian oak barrels for ageing. After 2 years, the wines from individual vineyards are blended and bottled
Royal Tokaji 6 Puttonyos Aszu Gold Label Tokay has a rich intense nose with hints of orange peel and spice. Very fine and elegant wine, full-flavoured with vibrant acidity, citrus and peach on the palate with a long, balanced finish. The Aszú wines show great structure, plenty of botrytis, depth and freshness with excellent complexity, all attributes of long ageing potential.
Enjoy now or cellar for future enjoyment as the wine matures. Sip on its own as an aperitif serve with fruit based desserts or hard cheeses or enjoy this mouth-watering wine on its own instead of a dessert. Serve cool.
