Schloss Johannisberger Riesling Auslese Rosalack is a sweet white wine from the Rheingau. Their auslese is designated by a Rosalack or “Pink Seal”.
Schloss Johannisberg is one of the most famous German wine estates. The vineyards were planted on the orders of the Roman Emperor Charlemagne. Schloss Johannisberg is a 35 hectare single vineyard wine estate (Einzellage) and can also lay claim to being the oldest Riesling estate in the world. It has been planted exclusively with 100% Riesling since 1720. The estate is located in the Rheingau wine growing region, and wine has been made at the site for over 900 years.
Schloss Johannisberg is a single vineyard designation in its own right and one of a handful of German vineyards that do not have to display a village name on the label. The winery is also famous for laying claim to inventing Late Harvest Wine and for being the home of quality designations for German wine. Schloss Johannisberg made the very first Spätlese level Riesling in 1775, followed by an Auslese wine in 1787 and an Eiswein in 1858.
The wines of Schloss Johannisberg have a colour coding system, the Yellow Seal, a QbA wine, whilst the green seal or Grunlack, for example, designates a Spatlese – the various classifications were used as the basis for the new German wine classification of 1971. Their Auslese is denoted by the Pink Seal or Rosalack.
Schloss Johannisberger Riesling Auslese Rosalack is a rich and textured, sweet Auslese with complex, honeyed aromas and notes of ripe pineapple. It is classically elegant with beautifully balanced sweetness and an outstandingly long finish.
This sweet German wine pairs beautifully with spicy Asian dishes like Thai curry, soft cheeses like Gorgonzola, or fruit-based desserts like peach cobbler. It is also a great pairing with foie gras, light seafood dishes and is simply great as an aperitif.
Schloss Johannisberger is classified as a VDP Grosse Lage (“great site”), the designation for the highest quality German vineyards. VDP = Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter. These sites produce wines with unique terroir character and excellent cellaring potential.
It is a designation within the VDP (Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates) for Germany’s highest quality, precisely demarcated vineyards and can be said to be comparable to French Grand Cru sites.
Grapes from these top sites are hand-harvested and subject to strict yield limits and quality controls.
