Zuccardi Soleria by Malamado is a fortified wine made from 100% Torrontés grapes. Fortified with grape brandy, it produces a fabulous tawny Port-style wine and is the first fortified Torrontés wine from Argentina. It has aromas of dried apricot, orange peel and honey leading to a rich, silky palate with nutty complexity and a long, warming finish.
Zuccardi also produce a red, fortified Malbec wine, an Argentinian take on a ruby-style Port. Both wines are available to buy online in the UK from Fareham Wine Cellar.
Zuccardi Wines was founded by Alberto “Tito” Zuccardi. Zuccardi was an engineer who had arrived in Mendoza from the Tucuman province of northwestern Argentina, where his Italian grandparents had settled. Zuccardi was primarily working on irrigation systems, which are extremely important in a region with minimal rainfall. In order to demonstrate his irrigation system, Alberto planted a vineyard in Maipu in 1963. This was to be the Zuccardi family’s entry into the world of wine. Construction of their first winery followed in 1968.
Zuccardi was followed into the business by his son, Jose, in 1976, and Jose’s son, Sebastian, who is now the Zuccardi winemaker, joined the family business in 2002. In 2019, Sebastian was voted one of South America’s most exciting winemakers by Decanter Magazine and Zuccardi Valle de Uco voted “The World’s Best Vineyard”.
Zuccardi is based in the Valle de Uco, with a modern winery completed in Paraje Altamira in 2013. Located at the foot of the Andes, the Valle de Uco runs north to south along the western edge of Mendoza and is renowned for producing high-quality wines. Zuccardi’s vineyards span approximately 800 hectares, with sites in Paraje Altamira, La Consulta, Vista Flores, Santa Rosa and Maipú.
Around 35% of Zuccardi’s vineyards are organically certified, with the remaining vineyards managed using sustainable practices.
Zuccardi Soleria by Malamado has a golden amber colour with copper hues. On the nose, this wine expresses aromas of dried fig, nut, toasted chestnut, dried peach, dried apricot, orange zest, honey, beeswax, and honeycomb. A buttery, intense flavour on the palate with hints of golden raisin, star anise, kumquat, date in syrup.
Serve with mild creamy cheeses. Try as an alternative to Tawny Port.
