Showcasing Niepoort’s signature balance of freshness and complexity, it offers a smooth, velvety palate with flavours of dried fruits, roasted nuts, caramel, and subtle spice. Ideal if you’re looking to buy a high-quality reserve tawny Port in the UK, Niepoort Senior offers exceptional value and character.

Niepoort Senior Tawny Port Winemaking

  • Grapes – Niepoort Senior Port is a classic Douro blend of Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinto Cão, Tinta Francisca, Tinta Amarela, Sousão and other traditional Douro varieties.
  • Vineyards – the grapes come from old vineyards in Vale do Pinhão and Ferrão with an average vine age of 30 years.
  • Traditional Winemaking – grapes are hand-picked and foot-trodden in traditional stone lagares.
  • Ageing – after vinification, the wine is transferred to Niepoort’s lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia, where it is matured in small oak barrels.
  • Slow Oxidation – the small barrels allow gentle, controlled contact with oxygen through the wood, resulting in a slow and graceful oxidation process.
  • Average Age – The Senior final blend has an average age of 7 years old.

Niepoort Vinhos, A Port Wine Legend

Niepoort Vinhos is one of Portugal’s most revered wine and Port producers, small in size but second to none in quality. The house was founded in 1842 by Franciscus Marius Niepoort from Holland, and the company has remained family-owned for five generations. Today, the house is led by the visionary Dirk Niepoort, whose three children, Daniel, Marco and Ana, have all joined the business. Daniel, the eldest, has been involved in winemaking at the company since 2020.

Niepoort: Small House, World-Class Port

Despite being amongst the smallest shippers in the Port trade, Niepoort has earned a place alongside the greatest Vintage Port producers in the world. As James Suckling once wrote, “Niepoort is to Vintage Port what Krug is to Champagne” – a small house in a world of large competitors, producing outstanding wines that very few can match. Niepoort is famous for its aged Tawny Ports (Colheitas and Garrafeiras) but also has an enviable reputation for its Vintage Ports, which are made at the Vale de Mendiz winery in the Douro Valley. That is not to mention their world-class still wines!

A Good Introduction to Tawny Port

Niepoort Senior Tawny Port is a fantastic wine if you’re looking for a step up from a standard entry-level tawny Port before moving on to older, more complex expressions like Niepoort 10 Year Old Tawny. One of the best tawny Ports under £30.

Tasting Notes

Niepoort Senior Tawny Port has a warm brick-red tawny colour and opens with inviting aromas of dried fruits (figs and prunes) layered with toasted nuts and a gentle touch of spice.

On the palate, it is luxuriously velvety and full-bodied, revealing flavours of caramel, candied orange peel and subtle oak. A carefully crafted blend of older wines, which provide richness and depth, and younger wines that add freshness and complexity, it maintains a lively acidity that keeps it balanced and never heavy.

A beautifully poised, characterful tawny Port.

Food Pairing

Niepoort Senior Tawny is a wonderfully versatile port that can be served at room temperature or lightly chilled. It is also quite delicious on its own as an after-dinner drink.

Good food pairings include:

  • Creamy cheeses such as Brie or Camembert, as well as the classic Stilton
  • It also works well with nutty, aged cheeses such as a strong Cheddar or Comté
  • Classic British puddings, think treacle sponge or sticky toffee pudding
  • Chocolate-based desserts, where the tawny’s richness is a natural match
  • A simple plate of nuts and dried fruit (walnuts, pecans and figs) makes a great match for an aged tawny Port
