Description

Barbeito Boal (Bual) Reserva is a medium sweet Madeira with a refreshing acidity. It is made from 100% Boal grapes which are also known as Bual (and this is the more commonly used name.

Barbeito Madeira was founded in 1946 by Maria Barbeito de Vasconcelos. The company passed into the hands of his daughter Dona Manuela and then onto her sons in the early 1990s. One of the most significant years in Barbeito’s history was 1991 when the company entered into a joint venture with Kinoshita International Company Ltd of Japan, a company that Barbeito already had close commercial and personal relationships with since 1967. Today Mario’s grandson, Ricardo de Freitas, runs Vinhos Barbeito. Barbeito is a very traditinal canteiro style madeira and undergoes no de-acidification nor addition of caramel.

Barbeito work closely with local producers and have input with them to ensure that each harvest the grapes are harvested to the specification of winemaker Ricardo de Freitas. Grapes for the Barbeito Boal (Bual) Reserva are sourced from vineyards in Arco da Calheta e Prazeres. After harvest the grapes are pressed in a pneumatic presses. When the desired level of sweetness is reached, in this case medium sweet, fermentation is stopped with the addition of grape alcohol (an un-aged, undiluted brandy) with a strength of 96%. After this the Boal is aged in French oak casks for 5 years by the Canteiro method. The Canteiro method is used for only the highest quality Madeiras – the wines are aged without the use of artificial heat, in warm rooms heated by the sun. Other Madeiras may be artificially heated to replicate this process. The wines for the Barbeito Boal Reserva are specially selected from areas in Barbeito’s warehouses with a very table year round temperature, this produces a very well balanced wine in sugar and acidity.

Barbeito do not add any caramel for flavour or colouring.
