About Blandy’s 10 Year Old Madeiras

Blandy’s 10 year old Madeiras are a blend of wines with an average of 10 years in seasoned American oak casks. The wines were aged at the family’s Lodge in Funchal in the traditional ‘Canteiro’ system, whereby the wine is gradually transferred from the higher floors where the temperatures are higher, to the middle floors and eventually to the ground floor where temperatures are cooler. The process of transferring the barrels is absolutely critical to ensure the right balance of ullage and concentration. All through the ageing process, the primary fruit flavours of the wine are gently transformed into tertiary dried fruit notes that produce the unique Madeira hallmark bouquet.

Blandy’s: Madeira Royalty

For over 200 years, Blandy’s Madeira has been synonymous with quality Madeira wine. The Blandy family has played a leading role in the development of Madeira wine throughout its history, with family members still living on the island and maintaining traditions that date back to 1811.

In 1989, seeking to expand their global reach, Blandy’s partnered with another distinguished Anglo-Portuguese family—the Symingtons, owners of renowned Port houses including Dow, Warre, Graham, and Cockburn. Together, they formed the Madeira Wine Company (MWC). This successful partnership led to a 2011 agreement that returned controlling interest to the Blandy family, with the Symingtons remaining as minority shareholders. Today, Michael and Chris Blandy—6th and 7th-generation family members—continue working in the business, ensuring this remarkable 200-year tradition endures.
