Cossart Gordon Madeira can trace its beginnings back to 1745 when it was founded by three Scotsmen, Francis Newton, his brother Thomas and Thomas Murdoch. An Irishman, William Cossart, joined the firm in 1808 and by the late nineteenth century the company was active in all areas of the wine trade including Port, Sherry, Marsala and Malaga. The company continued in the vein until the start of World War Two when the firm began to specialise only in Madeira. In 1953 Cossart Gordon became a member of the Madeira Wine Association, which would eventually become the Madeira Wine Company. In 1989 the Symington Family (world-famous owners of Dows, Grahams, Warres Port et al.) took a majority stake in the Madeira Wine Company which also owns Blandys, Leacocks and Miles Madeira. This partnership continues today and in 2011 the Blandys and the Symingtons signed an agreement giving the Blandy family control of the (MWC).

Cossart Gordon Vintage Madeiras are aged in cask for a minimum of 20 years before being bottled under the supervision of the Madeira Wine Institute. Vintage Madeira, also known as Frasqeira, then receives an additional two years bottle ageing before release. Cossart Gordon 1989 Bual Vintage Madeira was aged for 29 years in seasoned American oak casks in the traditional ‘Canteiro’ system, whereby the casks were gradually transferred from the top floors of the lodge, where it is naturally warmer, to the middle floors and eventually to the ground floor where it is cooler. The wine was regularly racked and when it reached the desired stage of maturity it was bottled.

Madeira is a complex, interesting wine and is made in virtually every vintage. Due to the unique estufagem aging process Madeira is one of the longest-lived wines and also improves for days after opening, but will keep, once opened, for a month and more in a decanter. It makes an ideal wedding or anniversary present. Traditionally Madeira varies in style and sweetness depending on the grape variety that the Madeira is made from. Sercial produces the driest style, the rarer Tarrantez and Verdelho produce a Medium Dry style, Bual (sometimes called Boal) produces a Medium Rich style and Malvasia (also known as Malmsey) produces the richest and sweetest styles.
