Niepoort 1997 Colheita Port is a single vintage tawny Port made with grapes harvested in 1997.
Niepoort Vinhos may be small, but it is a very well-regarded Portuguese wine producer with a rich history dating back to 1842. The company was founded by Franciscus Marius Niepoort from Holland and has been family-owned for generations, currently led by the visionary Dirk Niepoort, the fifth generation. Niepoort’s three children, Daniel, Marco and Ana have all entered the family business. In particular, the eldest son, Daniel, has been involved in winemaking at the company since 2020.
Despite being one of the smallest shippers in the Port trade, they are second to none in quality. Already famous for their classic tawny ports, they have now joined the ranks of the great producers of Vintage Port. “Niepoort is to Vintage Port what Krug is to Champagne. They are both small houses in a world dominated by large competitors but they are producing outstanding wines which very few can match.” (James Suckling, Vintage Port).
The grapes for Niepoort Colheita Port come from vineyards in Vale do Pinhão and Ferrão in the Douro Valley, where the vines are over 60 years old. The soils are schistous and grape varieties included in the blend are Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Francisca, Tinta Amarela, Sousão, Tinta Roriz and other Douro varieties.
Colheita Port is a dated tawny Port aged in cask – the minimum age requirement for Colheita Port is that it has to be aged for at least 7 years in 550 L old barrels. The practice at Niepoort is to age their Colheita Ports for at least 10 years in casks before bottling.
From Niepoort:
Beautiful colour of orange tones and brick with good depth. The aroma and palate show the maturity of the wine, due to the long ageing in small old oak casks. It presents candied fruit notes, reminiscent of apricot and peach, integrated with smoke notes and dried fruit. In the mouth is very much alive, marked by a vibrant acidity and great volume. It’s enveloping, with a long and very pleasant finish.
Tawny Port is a delicious way to finish a meal and also pairs very well with desserts, almond tarts, dried fruit or as an aperitif served with foie gras.
