Capela da Quinta do Vesuvio 2016 Vintage Port 2.25 Litre Tappit Hen presented in the rare Tappit Hen (2.25 Litre) format bottle.
The 2016 Vintage Ports are exceptional, with tannins that are amongst the most refined ever, supporting beautiful red-fruit flavours with extraordinary intense, purple colour. They have impressive structure and balance, with Baumes, acidity, tannins and colour in rare and perfect alignment. This is no doubt a result of the later ripening cycle which allowed the grapes to mature evenly and completely.
Capela da Quinta do Vesuvio 2016 Vintage Port – The Symington family are pleased to announce the declaration of the 2016 Vintage Port from the iconic Quinta do Vesuvio estate in the remote upper reaches of the Douro Valley. This wine is made in granite lagares with teams of 50 foot treaders, faithful to a tradition dating back to the Romans.
This the third time that Capela da Quinta do Vesuvio has been made. The Vinha da Capela vineyard was one of the first to be replanted post-phylloxera at Quinta do Vesuvio in the late 19th century. The vineyard was cut in half when the Douro railway was extended upriver. Just 4 terraces remain of the original vineyard, which has been successively interplanted as vines reach the end of their useful life. Original vine cuttings are used for re-grafting in order to preserve the vineyard’s unique characteristics. This Vintage Port is inspired by the incredibly low-yielding 90-year-old vines from the Vinha da Capela vineyard, which yielded just 330g/vine and brings an extraordinary complexity and character to the wine.
Provenance and grape varieties
· Vinha da Capela: field blend
(very old, near 100-year-old vines)
· Vinha da Escola: Alicante Bouschet, Sousao, Touriga Nacional
· Vale da Teja: Touriga Franca.
As mentioned above this is bottled in the rare Tappit Hen bottle format. This is a 2.25 litre bottle which holds 3 standard 75cl bottles of Port. The name Tappit Hen is thought to derive from the old style, squat bottles which are said to resemble the Tappit Hen bird. A bottle that holds three standard 75cl bottles is also sometimes known as “tregnum”.
