Quinta do Vesuvio 2019 Vintage Port. 2019 was not a generally declared vintage but the Symington Family released this Port and produceds single quinta Ports from Cockburn’s, Dow’s, Graham’s and Warre’s.
From Symington Family Estates: “2019 was a year to celebrate the Douro’s remarkably resilient grape varieties in an unusually dry year. Our ability to closely monitor their varying maturation cycles and adjust our picking schedule accordingly meant we were able to deliver the best expression of the different varieties. When reviewing the top wines from 2019, we felt that the best expression of our grape varieties came from our six principal quintas – this is why we made the decision to release six Quinta Vintage Ports.”
Quinta do Vesuvio is the flagship Single Quinta of Symington Family Estates (owners of Dow, Warre, Grahams et al.) In 1823 Quinta do Vesuvio was purchased by the well-known Port grower António Bernard Ferreira who massively renovated and improved the estate. It passed through family hands until is was acquired by the Symington family in 1989 and who immediately set about restoring and renovating the estate to modern standards. The main house and winery were restored and a large planting and re-planting of existing vineyard was undertaken taking the vineyard area to 136 hectares. All grapes are trodden by foot and only Vintage Port is made at Quinta de Vesuvio. Between the extraordinary variety of microclimates and the range of grape varieties grown on the estate, the Quinta is capable of making a great Vintage Port in all but the most challenging years. The entire property is A-rated, the highest possible quality designation.
More from Symington Family Estates: “Late summer rain after an unusually dry winter and spring proved pivotal in achieving the balanced development and complete ripeness of the Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional. Characterised by blackcurrant and lavender aromas with traces of fennel, the wine delivers mouth-filling ripe black fruit flavours on the palate; opulent and velvety, although with substantial volume and weighty structure.”
