Description

Taylors 1971 Very Old Single Harvest Port is the 8th release in a series of limited edition Tawny Ports released by Taylors when they are 50 years old.

Founded in 1692, Taylor Fladgate & Yeatman is one of the oldest, and most, prestigious Port houses. Taylor’s Port is regarded as the benchmark for Vintage Port. Noted for their elegance and restrained power, their longevity and their distinctive scented character, these classic Vintage Ports are blended from the finest wines of the firm’s own ‘quintas’ or estates. Taylor’s three famous properties – Vargellas, Terra Feita and Junco – occupy distinct geographic locations. Each contributes its own unique character and dimension to the subtle harmony of the blend.

Taylors Port have one of the largest holdings of very old cask aged Ports in the Douro. These old Ports are single vintage Ports aged in seasoned oak casks, that is they are single vintage Tawny Ports (which are also known as “Colheita” Ports). Taylors first started releasing some of these older Tawny Port was limited editions when they were 50 years old in 2014 with the 1964 Vintage.

Taylors 1971 Very Old Single Harvest Port is made from grapes harvested in 1971 and has spent many years quietly ageing away in oak cask in Taylor’s cellars. This long period of oak ageing gives this Port its characteristic amber / tawny colour, smooth palate, complex, mellow flavours and rich aromas of dried fruits, nutty character and caramel nuances. As this will only have been bottled recently the Port will not need decanting (it will have been filtered at bottling) and is ready to drink. It is best served slightly chilled, between 12ºC to 16ºC.

The bottle is presented in a classic frosted Taylors Port bottle, in a high quality beech wood box and there are only a very limited number of bottles available worldwide.

Tasting Notes

From Taylor’s:

Medium tawny-brown hue gradually fading to a broad rim of pale amber. A wonderfully complete, multidimensional nose with a fine balance rare in a Port matured in cask for five decades. The seductive  redolence of oak wood does nothing to disturb the  wine’s symmetry and poise. Warm mellow notes of  black coffee, molasses and marzipan blend with dried fig, sultana and woody notes of cigar box and cedar. Subtle hints of tobacco leaf, faded rose petal and black  tea as well as spicy aromas of black pepper and scents  of orange flower combine to give the wine an attractive  romatic character. The overall effect is surprisingly  light and ethereal, intense but never overwhelming. The impression of lightness continues into the palate. Its roundness and silky texture are balanced by a fresh, perfectly integrated acidity which provides an attractive lift to the long, mellow finish. Elegance and equilibrium  are the hallmarks of this very fine aged Tawny in which multiple layers and dimensions of  aroma and flavour combine in perfect harmony.

Food Pairing

Taylor’s 1971 Single Harvest is an excellent accompaniment to many desserts. It combines well with flavours of figs, almonds and caramel. It is an excellent complement for a crème brûlée or a plate of wild strawberries. It may also be appreciated on  its own, at the end of the meal, with walnuts or dried fruit.
