Taylors Sentinels 2022 Vintage Port is made from a blend of Vintage Ports. It is a unique blend crafted from wines produced on Taylor’s historic properties in and around the Pinhão Valley, similar in concept to Fonseca Guimaraens Vintage Port. 2022 was the first release of Sentinels. Founded in 1692, Taylor Fladgate & Yeatman is one of the oldest and most prestigious Port houses. As well as Taylor’s Port, the company also owns the Fonseca, Croft and Krohn Port Houses. They are one of the largest producers of Port, and Taylor’s Port is regarded as the benchmark for Vintage Port. Their Ports are well-known for their elegance, restrained power, longevity and distinctive scented character.
The Port for the Taylors Sentinels 2022 Vintage Port is sourced from 4 of Taylor’s estates: Terra Feita, Junco, Casa Nova and Eira Velha. These are situated with the original vineyard demarcation of 1756 and they have all been awarded feitoria status, the top classification for Port vineyards. Noticeable by its absence is Quinta de Vargellas which was released separately as a vintage in 2022. Each of the four properties lend different characters due to their variation in altitude, orientation, sun, wind exposure and grape varietals grown. United, they produce a distinctive ‘Pinhão Valley’ style which is rich, deep, and powerfully fruity with each component contributing to the wine’s overall complexity and aroma.
Managing Director Adrian Bridge said: “The 2022 vintage ports are the result of a very dry and hot growing season which was broken by some very welcome rain at the beginning of harvest. The unique character of the Quinta de Vargellas vineyard is clearly expressed in the 2022 wines, and we therefore considered it appropriate to bottle this year as a single quinta vintage. As for the Fonseca Guimaraens 2022, this is showing the characteristic aromatic opulence and voluptuous ripe black fruit character, that are the hallmarks of the Guimaraens vintage style.”
Regarding the new release of the 2022 Taylor’s Sentinels, he continued by saying: “We are thrilled to introduce Taylor’s Sentinels Vintage Port to our collection. This release underscores our commitment to producing exceptional Ports that honour the legacy of our historic estates. The Taylor’s Sentinel’s blend is a celebration of our past and a testament to our dedication to quality.”
The Port is named “Sentinels” derived from the granite pillars, called “marcos de feitoria,” that stand watch along the line designating the best Port areas, where many of the Taylor’s estates are located. Between 1758 and 1761, a total of 335 stone posts were erected to define this esteemed area.
From Taylor’s,
“Deep purple black core with a narrow purple rim. An explosion of powerful woodland fruit, overlaid with a rich layer of blackcurrant, dark plum and cherries that jump out of the glass. The woodland fruit aromas are infused with subtle notes of dark cherry, hints of rockrose, a touch of mint and beautiful perfumed rose petals. The fruit is elegant and understated concealing the wines vigour and energy. On the palate the wine displays incredible freshness, purity of fruit and an attractive leanness, with a hint of lavender and herbal aromas. Laser focused berry fruits of damsons, plums and black cherries continue to build into the very long finish.”
Perfect on its own after a meal. It also pairs well with dark chocolate, blue cheeses, walnuts, dried apricots, figs and other dried fruits.
