Description

Borgo dei Trulli Salice Salentino Riserva is an Italian red wine made from grapes sourced from low-yielding vineyards in the Province of Lecce, in southern Puglia.

This wine is a blend of 90% Negroamaro and 10% Malvasia Nera and is bottled as a Salice Salentino Riserva Denominazione di Origine Protetta (DOP). Aged for a minimum of 12 months in barrel. Available now at Fareham Wine Cellar – discover one of Puglia’s finest traditional red wines.

Borgo dei Trulli Salice Salentino Riserva Winemaking

The Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera grapes come from carefully tended, low-yielding vines with an average age of 15 to 20 years old. These mature vines, rooted in Puglia’s distinctive limestone-rich soils, naturally produce smaller crops of concentrated, high-quality fruit. Harvest takes place in late September when the grapes reach optimal ripeness.

  • After harvest, grapes are destemmed but not crushed to reduce skin damage and optimise colour extraction
  • The two grape varieties are fermented together in stainless steel vats
  • Frequent remontage (pumping over) and délestage (rack-and-return) are used for soft aroma extraction and gentle tannins
  • Malolactic fermentation takes place in oak barrels
  • 80% of the wine rests in stainless steel, while 20% is aged in second and third-fill 500L oak tonneaux for 12 months
  • Finally, all components are blended, and the wine is bottled

About Borgo dei Trulli Wines

Masseria Borgo dei Trulli, to give it its full name, is a new wine venture made by Orion Wines, a company created to bring together interesting wines from small growers and wineries from all over Italy. The company was created by Luca Pomaro and winemaker Alessandro Michelon with the premise of producing wines from indigenous grapes that express the typicity of the particular region where they are grown.

The Masseria Borgo dei Trulli estate is located in the heart of Salento and is owned and managed by Orion wines with Alessandro Michelon as head winemaker. Around 80% of the wine produced at the estate is red wine produced from Negroamaro and Primitivo, with some white wine, including Vermentino.

What are Trulli?

Masseria Borgo dei Trulli is named after the traditional Apulian dry stone huts with a conical roof. These are known as a “trullo” or “trulli” in the plural and feature in the brand logo.

About Salice Salentino Riserva DOP

Salice Salentino is one of Puglia’s most respected wine appellations, located in the heart of the Salento peninsula. The Riserva designation indicates extended ageing – a minimum of 2 years total, with at least 6 months in bottle – resulting in wines with greater complexity and ageing potential.

The DOP (Denominazione di Origine Protetta) status guarantees the wine meets strict quality standards and is authentically from this specific region.

Borgo dei Trulli Salice Salentino Riserva offers enticing aromas of ripe red berries, dark cherry, and Mediterranean herbs with subtle notes of tobacco and spice from oak aging. On the palate, expect a harmonious balance of fruit concentration and earthy complexity, supported by smooth tannins and refreshing acidity. The finish is long and elegant with lingering notes of cherry and warm spice.

Food Pairing

Perfect pairings: Roasted lamb, grilled sausages, aged Pecorino cheese, rich tomato-based pasta dishes, or traditional Puglian orecchiette with broccoli rabe.
