Description

Caliterra Edicion Limitada A is a red wine blend from Colchagua in Chile. The ‘A’ stands for “Andes”, as this is Caliterra’s take on an “Andean” blend, a blend of Malbec and Carmenere. The Edicion Limitada range also consists of the B and the M blends which are a Cabernet Sauvignon dominated “Bordeaux style” blend and a spicier, Shiraz-y “Mediterranean” blend.

Caliterra was established in 1996 as a joint venture between the families of Robert Mondavi and Vina Errazuriz. In January 2004 Vina Errazuriz became the sole owners of Caliterra, at the heart of which is the impressive 1000 hectare Caliterra Estate. The name Caliterra is taken from ‘Calidad’ spanish for quality and ‘Tierra’ – land. The wine making philosophy of Caliterra is to produce fruit driven quality wines. Viña Caliterra is located in the heart of Colchagua, a protected valley southeast of Lago Rapel and adjoining the Apalta Valley, 150 meters above sea level. Crucially a large proportion of this estate, and all new plantings, are on prime hillside sites resulting in high quality fruit and complex wines.

As the names suggests, the Caliterra Edicion Limitada range is made in small quantities from small parcels of very special fruit. The Caliterra Edicion Limitada A is a blend of 60% Malbec and 40% Carmenere. The grapes are sourced from vineyards in the Colchagua Valley. The soils here are a mixture of deep granite soils, clay and colluvial soils and it has a Mediterranean climate, with cool nights and gentle breezes that temper the sun’s energy. After vinification, the wine is aged for 18 months in french oak barrels, 20% of which are new. Caliterra Edicion Limitada A is a unique pairing of the two signature grapes of South America.
