Casa de Saima Tonel-10 is a red wine made in the Bairrada DOC from 100% Baga grapes. It is a modern style of Baga with, a little lighter then some Saima’s other Baga wines
Casa de Saima was founded in 1940 and remains a small artisan produce of classic Bairrada wines. The estate is run by owned and run by Graca Miranda who continues to honour the ancient methods of foot treading and open-fermenting (for reds) before ageing in 100 year old casks. However Miranda is also a progressive and, understanding the need for change, in the last few years, the wines have been considerably more approachable upon first release without compromising its classic style. The Casa de Saima estate comprises some 18 hectares of small plots vineyards scattered within the Barraida DOC region including the famous Vinha da Corga vineyard. The vineyards are mainly planted with Baga, Bical and Maria Gomes grape varieties on clay soils. The old vines are situated on some of the best “terroirs” in the region.

The grapes are harvested by hand and undergo a first selection in the vineyard. The grapes then undergo a traditional vinification with traditional treading of grapes and natural fermentation in lagares. Casa de Saima Tonel-10 is then is then aged in a large, seasoned, wooden vat for 12 months. Specifically vat number 10 (Tonel 10), which would ordinarily be used for the property’s top Garrafeira wine.
