Castiglion del Bosco Brunello di Montalcino is 100% estate-grown Sangiovese and is an example of Sangiovese’s perfect symbiosis with the terroir of Montalcino.
The Castiglion del Bosco estate, which stretches over some 1800 hectares, with 62 hectares of vineyards, is owned by Massimo Ferragamo, Chairman of Italian luxury goods producer Salvatore Ferragamo. The estate is one of the most prominent in Montalcino and can trace its history back 400 years. In 1967, Castiglion del Bosco was one of seven founding members of the Consorzio del Brunello di Montalcino. The estate has undergone several changes in ownership in the last 30 years until Ferragamo bought it in 2003. To say that a lot of money has been spent on improving the estate and wine-making facilities would be an understatement.
The Sangiovese grapes for Castiglion del Bosco Brunello di Montalcino are sourced from the estate’s Capanna vineyards. These vineyards are situated at 350m above sea level with soils composed of the typical greyish Galestro stones of Tuscany and layers of clay and sandstone. There is a strong maritime influence with hot, dry summers and constant winds that help remove moisture and prevent mould and rot problems. The Galestro stones in the soil are said to give the wine its unique complexity and structure.
Winemaking at Castiglion del Bosco is managed by Cecilia Leoneschi, who has been at the winery since 2003 and who oversees both the vineyards and the cellar. Cecilia is supported by the experienced oenologist Nicolò d’Afflitto. The entire vinification process is carried out in Castiglion del Bosco’s cellar, which is completely gravity-fed.
“A wine of great finesse and elegance. Complex and rich on the nose, where notes of small red fruit are immediately perceived with hints of aromatic herbs, including thyme and bay leaf. in the mouth it is fruity, with notes of plum, the finish has an interesting acid note and gives the wine a remarkable balance, elegant and persistent. Wine meant for long ageing.” Oenologist, Cecilia Leoneschi
Castiglion del Bosco Brunello di Montalcino is excellent with stews, roasted meats and cheese.
