Castiglion del Bosco Brunello di Montalcino is 100% estate grown Sangiovese and is an example of Sangiovese’s perfect symbiosis with the terroir of Montalcino.
The Castiglion del Bosco estate, which stretches over some 1800 hectares, with 62 hectares of vineyards, is owned by Massimo Farragamo, Chairman of Italian luxury goods producer Salvatore Ferragamo. The estate is one of the most prominent in Montalcino and can trace its history back 400 years. In 1967 Castiglion del Bosco was one of seven founding members of the Consorzio del Brunello di Montalcino. The estate has undregone several changes in ownership in the last 30 years until Ferragamo bought it in 2003. To say that a lot of money has been spent on improving the estate and wine making facilities would be an understatement.
The Sangiovese grapes for Castiglion del Bosco Brunello di Montalcino are sourced from the estate’s Capanna vineyards. These vineyards are situated at 350m above sea level with soils composed of the typical greyish Galestro stones of Tuscany and layers of clay and sandstone. There is a stone maritime influence with hot, dry summers and constant winds that help remove moisture and prevent mould and rot problems. The Galestro stones in the soil are said to give the wine its unique complexity and structure.
Winemaking at Castiglion del Bosco is managed by Cecilia Leoneschi who has been at the winery since 2003 and who oversees both the vineyards and the cellar. Cecilia is supported by the experienced oenologist Nicolò d”Afflitto. The entire vinification process is carried out in Castiglion del Bosco’s cellar which is completely gravity-fed. Grapes are harvested and transported to winery in 20kg crates where they undergo careful hand selection at sorting tables priory to pressing. After malolactic fermentation the wine is aged in French barriques, 20% new and 80% first and second passage, for 24 months before bottling. After bottling, the wine spends a further 12 months in bottle before release.
