Description

Chateau Calon Segur is a historic Chateau located in the St Estephe wine growing appellation of Bordeaux. It was classifed as one of 14 third growths in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification.

Chateau Calon Segur has been owned, since 2012, by Suravenir Assurances, an insurance company. The estate covers some 55 hectares with 45 hectares planted with 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. It is a single vineyard block and it is completely surrounded by a stone wall. Inside, closest to the château, this “enclos” groups together the most famous plots of Calon. The average vine age is 22 years. The grapes are hand-harvest with sorting in the vineyard and mechanical and manual sorting again at the winery. Cabernet Sauvignon is the backbone of Calon Ségur. This grape variety makes up over three-quarters of the blend, and in great years its proportion can be as high as 90%.

Chateau Calon Segur is usually aged for 18 to 20 months in French oak, 30% of which are new. The consultant oenologist is Eric Boissenet.
