Cos d’Estournel is located in the midst of its 91 hectares of vineards. These are located between Pauillac and St Estephe and only separated from the vineyards of Lafite by the stream known as La Jalle du Breuil (The Breuil Brook). Hill of Cos (‘Cos’ means ‘The Hill of Pebbles’ in the old Gascon language) dominates the Gironde from the height of almost 65 feet. These gravelly soils are planted with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, although the percentages are varied in the blend from vintage to vintage. Only vines over 20 years of ages are used to produced the main Chateau wine. Harvest is by hand into small wooden baskets and there is a strict selection of only the best grapes.
