Château Coufran a prestigious Haut-Médoc wine estate known as the ‘Pomerol of Médoc’ for its Merlot-dominant Bordeaux red wines. It is located in Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne on Bordeaux’s Left Bank next to the St Estephe appellation. This 76-hectare vineyard has been family-owned since 1924.
The Château Coufran estate, dating back to the 18th century when it was known as the noble house of “Cousran,” has passed through several notable families including the Baron of Brane (the “Napoleon of the Vines” who championed Cabernet in the Médoc), Jean-Valère Cabarrus who acquired it after the revolution, and the Célérier family who undertook major architectural renovations in the late 19th century.
Château Coufran has been owned by the Miailhe family since 1924. Louis Miailhe’s 1924 acquisition marked a defining moment, as he established the current “Coufran” spelling. He also decided to replant the vineyard with Merlot. The estate therefore stands out from its Haut-Médoc neighbours somewhat as it is a Merlot, rather than Cabernet Sauvignon dominated, blend. This has earned it the nickname “the Pomerol of Médoc”. There is a second wine called La Rose Marechale.
The vineyard covers some 76 hectares in a single block and the vines have an average age of 50 years old. The vineyard is planted with 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon on a terroir of gravel, rock and clay soil.
Château Coufran is produced using traditional Bordeaux methods. The wine is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks to preserve the freshness and purity of fruit. Extraction during maceration is carefully managed to achieve balanced colour, structure and aromatics. After both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation, the final blend is selected through rigorous tastings, overseen by renowned consultant oenologist Eric Boissenot.
Only the finest parcels are chosen for the first wine, ensuring consistency and quality in every vintage. The wine is then matured in barrels for 12 months. A quarter of the barrels are replaced with new ones each year (using only French oak). The wine is blended one last time before bottling in the spring of its second year.
The final blend of the Coufran main wine is usually composed of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Château Coufran has deep ruby with aromas of ripe plum, dark cherry, and blackcurrant enhanced by subtle vanilla and oak. The palate delivers juicy red fruit with firm yet refined tannins, balanced acidity, and notes of dark berries, cherry, and cedar.
This Bordeaux wine is an ideal partner for roast lamb with rosemary, duck confit or a wild mushroom risotto.
It also pairs beautifully with hard cheeses like aged Comté.
The Haut-Médoc appellation is located on the Left Bank of the Gironde Estuary and is renowned for producing some of Bordeaux’s finest and most sought-after wines. The region is known for its gravelly soil, which is ideal for growing Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and other grape varieties used in Bordeaux blends.
While both appellations are on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, Haut-Médoc refers to the “High” Médoc, located further upstream (i.e. south) where the soil is generally of higher quality, featuring more gravel and better drainage. Haut-Médoc is considered a more prestigious appellation than the broader Médoc AOC and is home to famous communal appellations like Margaux, Pauillac, and Saint-Julien.
