Description

Chateau du Glana is a red Bordeaux wine from the St Julien appellation of Bordeaux. It is situated on the “Route des Grands Vins” between the towns of Beychevelle and Saint-Julian opposite the world famous Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou.

Chateau du Glana was built in 1870 by a My Cayx who bought 5 hectares of vineyards on good, gravelly soils. The chateau passed through various owners until it was bought by Mr Gabriel Meffre in 1961. Over the years he has enlarged the vineyard surface area to 59.50 hectares which included several plots of vines from the well-known third growth, Chateau Lagrange. Today the estate is managed by Jean-Paul Meffre and his two sons Ludovic and Julien. The estate has improved vastly over the last 20 years, the estate buildings have all be completely restored, vineyard practices are much improved and Professor Denis Dubourdieu consults.

As mentioned above, the vineyards now comprise nearly 60 hectares planted on Garonne gravel soils. The vineyards are planted with 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot with an average vine age of 25 years old.

After harvest the grapes are left to macerate in cool condition followed by 3 weeks of vatting (concrete and stainless). The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in vat. The wine is aged for 12 months in French oak barrels from various cooperages. The perentage of new oak varies from vintage to vintage.

The Chateau du Glana is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot aged for 12 months, with 40% new oak. From the Chateau, “the blend of grape varieties was 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. The latter produced very fresh, concentrated, and rich wine. The Cabernet Sauvignon wines are simply wonderful, showing great elegance and subtlety”
