Chateau Montrose 2008, presented here in 37.5cl half bottles, is one of the more famous second growths, indeed, it is often referred to as one of the “super seconds”.
Chateau Montrose is located in the St Estephe appellation of Bordeaux and was classified as a one of fifteen Deuxièmes Crus (Second Growths) in the original Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855. The vineyards cover some 168 acres planted with 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc. Chateau Montrose is the main wine (they also produce a second wine called La Dame de Montrose) and is the result of rigorous selection at each stage of production, in both the vineyard and the winery. This great, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon based wine is typical of the Saint-Estèphe appellation.
Chateau Montrose 2008 is the third vintage under new owner Martin Bouygues. Bouygues bought the property from the Charmolüe family who had owned it since 1896 and brought Jean Delmas out of retirement (ex Chateau Haut Brion) to oversee winemaking. The wine is a blend of mainly Cabernet Sauvignon (around two thirds), Merlot and Petit Verdot. Under Bouygues a massive programme of renovation and renewal has resulted in a new state of the art sustainable winery and new buildings redesigned in order to optimise the conditions for making and maturing wine.
Chateau Montrose 2008 is a blend of 65% Cabernet-Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. Matured for 18 months in 60% new oak barrels.
