Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild 2012 is the second wine of Château Mouton Rothschild and has been produced since 1993, although the name “Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild” was first used in 1994. Petit Mouton is the name of the late Baroness Philippine’s residence on the Rothschild estate.
Château Mouton Rothschild, which is located in the Pauillac wine-growing appellation of Bordeaux, is one of the world’s most prestigious wine estates. Famously, it was awarded First Growth status in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification (they were promoted in 1973). It has been owned by the Rothschild family since 1853, when Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild purchased the estate. They are renowned for producing exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated red wines known for their elegance, complexity, and ageing potential. They also produce a white wine called Aile d’Argent.
Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild is made from a selection of the youngest vines and harvested, vinified and bottled in the same way – the grapes are collected in small baskets; the wine is fermented in the famous Mouton oak vats and aged in barrels using traditional methods. Everything is done to ensure that the wine expresses the elegance and depth of a great Pauillac. Only very small quantities are ever produced.
The label for Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild is another design by Jean Carlu, the man who was also behind the first ever Mouton label, for the 1924 vintage.
Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild 2012 is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon 79%, Merlot 19% and 2% Cabernet Franc.
Château Mouton Rothschild Le Petit Mouton 2012 displays an attractive deep red colour.
Its expressive nose reveals complex aromas of ripe bigarreau cherry and blackberry, complemented by hints of spice, vanilla, and prunes in spirit.
On the palate, it opens with remarkable gentleness and refinement, unfolding into a full, lush body with dominant flavours of spice, vanilla, and prunes in spirit, supported by a well-structured, mid-weight tannic framework.
The finish is long and mineral-driven, offering a fresh, intense conclusion with elegant finesse.
