Description

Domaine Comte Armand Volnay is 100% Pinot Noir from the Côte de Beaune wine-growing region of Burgundy.

Domaine Comte Armand has been owned by the Armand family since 1825. The estate is most famous for their 9 hectare Clos des Epeneaux monopole vineyard, acquired in 1828, in Pommard which is regarded as one of the finest in the Pommard AC. The estate remained as such for many, many years.; however’ the estate was expanded in 1994 when it annexed a vineyard plot situated in the neighbouring village of Volnay and then later parcels from the village of Auxey-Duresses. Winemaker since 2014 has been Paul Zinetti.

The Auxey-Duresses AC was created in 1970 and is located located in the Saint-Romain Valley, an east-west hiatus in the Côte d’Or escarpment, to the north west of Meursault. The climate around Auxey-Duresses is of continental type, with warm, dry summers and cool, extended winters. 

The grapes are 100% destemmed and and are not crushed. The grapes undergo pre-fermentation maceration period of 5-8 days at a temperature of 13-14°C followed by a spontaneous alcoholic fermentation which lasts between 5-10 days. There follows a post-fermentation maceration of 3 to 15 days depending on the vintage. Depending on the appellation and age of the vines, Domaine Comte Armand’s wines will be matured for 18 to 24 months in barrels, with a percentage of new oak ranging from 0% for the Village appellations to 30% for the old vines of Clos des Epeneaux.

The grapes for Domaine Comte Armand Volnay come from two distinct lieux-dits: les Grands Champs, and les Famines. The first climat (local term for plot) produces very fine, elegant wines quite characteristic of the appellation, while the second tends to give wines with more body. They are vinified separately and usually assembled once they have matured. The wine is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, 20% of which are new.

Around 5500 bottles produced each vintage.
