Description

Domaine du Clos des Papes Chateauneuf du Pape is red wine from the Rhone. It is mainly a blend of Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah.

Domaine du Clos des Papes is a renowned winery located in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation in the southern Rhône Valley of France. Domaine du Clos de Papes takes its name from one of its vineyard plots which lies near the ruins of an ancient, 14th century papal castle. It is considered one of the top producers in the region and has a long history of winemaking. The estate has been owned and operated by the Avril family for several generations. The current proprietor, Paul-Vincent Avril, took over the estate in the late 1980s and has since garnered international acclaim for his wines. The estate consists of 24 indvidual parcels of vines throughout the appellation totalling some 32 heactares of vines. Yields are very low at around 22 hectoliters per hectare

Clos des Papes produces both red and white wines, but it is primarily known for its red Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The red blend typically consists of predominantly Grenache but has normally has more Mourvedre in the the blend, around 20%, compared to other producers. The 2016 Domaine du Clos des Papes Chateauneuf du Pape is a blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah and 5% other grape varieties.
