Mazzei Fonterutoli Siepi is a blend of 50% Merlot and 50% Sangiovese. it is a highly concentrated wine with sweet and dense tannins, it features a unique and original character that is appreciated by wine lovers throughout the world.
The Mazzei family has owned Castello di Fonterutoli estate since 1435 and it is located in the heart of the Chianti Classico wine-growing region some a couple of miles to the south of the commune of Castellina in Chianti in Tuscany. The history of the Mazzei family is intrinsically linked to the history of winemaking in Tuscany and there are mentions of the family as far back as the 11th Century. A new state of the art winery, designed by family member and architect, Agnesi Mazzei, was completed in 2006. The winery is gravity fed, the grapes, juice and wine move throughout the winery under their weight and a big emphasis is placed on sustainability and minimal environmental impact. Today the Today the estate comprises some 650 hectares, 117 hectares under vine.
Siepi is a 6 hectare vineyard located 260 metres above sea level with south, south-west exposure. The soil is mainly Alberese and the average vineyard age is 13 – 26 years. Spur cordon-training and Guyot training systems are used and 4,500-6,500 vines are planted per hectare. Siepi’s exposure is unique. The vineyard is situated on a plateau that is well lit throughout the day and that is surrounded by an oak forest, creating a perfect micro-climate and a high diurnal range. After harvest the Merlot and Sangiovese are macerated for 14 days and 18 days respectively. The wine is aged 18 months in small French oak barrels (225 lt / 70% new).
Try Siepi with rack of lamb with red-currant wine sauce, tandoori spiced lamb chops, grilled sirloin steak with anise basil butter or braised pork loin cutlets with thyme-lemon sauce.
Fonterutoli Siepi is monumentally built with crispy notes of elder, plum, berries, sandalwood, tobacco and a very long, bright finish
