Description

Gaja Ca’Marcanda Promis is one of three wines made at Gaja’s Ca’Marcanda estate alongside the Magari and their flagship Ca’Marcanda. The estate is located in the Maremma region in the south of Tuscany. Promis was first released in 2000 and is bottled as a Toscana Idicazione Geografica Protetta.

A Piedmont Legend

Gaja Wines is simply one of the most famous Italian wine producers. The business was founded in 1859 in Langhe, Piedmont by Giovanni Gaja, and it is his great-grandson, Angelo Gaja, who currently runs the company. They are most famous for classic Piedmont wines such as Barolo and Barbaresco. Indeed, Angelo has often been referred to as the “King of Barbaresco” and has been responsible for developing techniques that have revolutionised winemaking in Italy.

A Move Into Tuscany

Gaja bought their first property in Tuscany called Pieve Santa Restituta in 1994 and this was swiftly followed by the second Tuscan property, Ca’Marcanda is located at Castagneto Carducci in Bolgheri, in 1996. Whereas the concentration at Pieve Santa Restituta is on more traditional wines, the focus at Ca’Marcanda is on international grape varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot) and “Super-Tuscan” style blends. The estate now consists of 100 hectares of vineyards.

Gaja Ca’Marcanda Promis Winemaking

Gaja Ca’Marcanda Promis is a blend of 55% Merlot, 35% Syrah, 10% Sangiovese. The vineyards are situated on loam- and clay-rich terre brune, brown soils. The climate here is typical Mediterranean maritime, characterised by hot summer days with cool nights freshened by the local sea breezes which blow up a natural corridor between the coast and nearby Corsica. This allows the grapes to mature evenly over a long period, ideal for the grapes. The grapes come from vineyards in Bolgheri and the neighbouring area of Bibbona. The three varieties are fermented and macerated separately for around 15 days. After 12 months of oak ageing, the wines are blended and left to age in the bottle for some months before release.

The name “Promis” signifies the Gaja family’s commitment, or promise, to produce wines of the highest quality possible, the rewards of diligence and excellence.

Tasting Notes

From Gaja: “This wine shows aromas of ripe fruits, like black cherry and black plum. It is complex and deeper on the nose, with charming notes of sandalwood and essential oils. It is well-structured and voluptuous in the mouth, combined with a refreshing acidity. 2019 Promis displays terrific harmony and a saline quality, which is characteristic of grapes from Bolgheri. Persistent hints of aromatic herbs come from the more windy area of Bibbona.”

Food Pairing

Promis is perfect with grilled red meats and game dishes.
